Sussex Carol, Daquin Noel, In the Bleak Midwinter

Postby Rev Tony Newnham » 09 Dec 2021 11:22

Hi

Back in 2006 I produced a CD of Christmas instrumentals, some improvised meditations on carols using piano & synthesiser, some short classical pieces played on the chamber organ in my last church, and a couple of other tracks. I thought I'd share some of the tracks. I have a small quantity of CD's left, and can produce more if anyone wants one (but once my current stock is gone I'm unlikely to have new discs ready before Christmas)

First up is the title track - my arrangement of the Sussex Carol, played on a Casio keyboard and the MidiTzer virtual theatre organ (manuals only)

Sticking with the MidiTzer, the next track is cinema organ goes classical. It's the Daquin Noel X I've tried to match the sounds that Daquin asks for to some extent - but it's far from a historically informed performance, and I really go to town for the big ending!

Finally, something rather quieter and more reflective. An arrangement of "In the Bleak Midwinter" played on Roland digital piano.

Enjoy

Wishing you all a very happy Christmas and a blessed New Year.

Tony

Hi Tony. Enjoyed my listen. Liked the Daquin Noel with the echoing organs a powerful finish. The piano fitted the last one and I think it is one of your favourites. All the best. Have a good Christmas and a healthy new year. John

Hi there Tony,
Three nice performances I enjoyed them all well played my friend. :D :D :D

Jon D. :) :)
Hi there I have played from the age of 13 and all my music is played in a sort of dance tempo style. Have worked in nearly all the North East clubs over the years. That gave me a good grounding. Cheers.

I loved your playing of the Daquin Noel. Years ago on Karl Haas radio program he played a recording of that on the organ in Notre Dame (France) and I have never forgotten it. I reckon your rendition is very very good. Thanks for posting.
PS I have just membered the name of his weekly radio broadcast. It was called "Adventures In Good Music" aired first in 1959.I wish I had kept some of his wonderful hour long Adventures in good music program which I taped on to cassettes.

I love listening to members performances on this forum and I ALWAYS turn off the speakers on my lap top and plug in my headphones.

Thanks. That Noel is a fun piece - but not the easiest. I have a whole book of French Noels by Daquin and a couple of other comsers of the era.
