Portamento

In music, Portamento is a pitch sliding from one note to another.

This can only be done with instruments that are capable of doing it (Logic). Clarinet, trombone etc. It does not work with SA or SA2 voices.

To get the effect you need to choose the voice, I chose “German Clarinet”, set the MONO on and adjust the Portamento timing in the mixing console. The higher the setting the longer it takes to go from one note to the next. Playing legato can make an awful mess of things. You need to play like a piano, one note at a time releasing the first note before playing the next one. The keyboard tends to remember the last note played so you have to allow time and get used to what is happening. It has to be registered to a button as if you change to another voice it is cancelled.

This recording was done with “German Clarinet”, set with the MONO on and the Portamento timing set to 60. This is a DEMO so the 'glide' is more pronounced than it should be so you can hear the effect. In practice, best to be done sparingly .. and there is a technique to master to get it to sound right.

Glissando

Not to be confused with Glissando which is running up/down the keys as individual notes .. not 'sliding' the pitch between them.
Here is an example of Glissando, first with some strings; then followed by the piano.

Here's another showing how a 'moving' voice (a 'whistle') can be very effective in creating an 'atmosphere' in a piece.

A look at Portamento again.

Going over what Den has said above, the essence of this is:

    1. Portamento is a 'pitch' sliding from one note to another.
    2. It can only be done with instruments that are capable of doing it eg. clarinet, trombone etc.
    3. It does not work with SA (Super Articulation) or SA2 voices.
    4. The voice has to be set to MONO.
    5. You have to adjust the Portamento timing in the MIXING CONSOLE. The higher the setting the longer it takes to go from one note to the next.
    6. There is a technique to using it. To get the 'slide' to work you must press the first note, hold that first note down and press the second note (so you are holding both notes down together) .. and immediately release the first note you played. If you play one note and release it before you play the next note you will not get any slide. You wouldn't want 'slide' between every note you played (that would be over the top!), which is why I say there is a technique to using it. Only put a 'slide' where you want it.
In this DEMO below I have set up my Tyros 4 with a German Clarinet (not an SA Voice); pressed the MONO button in VOICE EFFECT; pressed the MIXING CONSOLE button and set the PORTAMENTO time to 40.

First, here is a DEMO of what happens when you hold down a note (bottom C) followed by pressing a second note (top C) .. and then releasing the first note played. This is followed by lifting the finger off the bottom C before playing the top one.

Click to listen; then click the back arrow at the top to get back to this page.
DEMO of a distinct 'slide' between two notes, followed by no slide between them

And in this one I have played a verse of Stranger on the Shore with a slide where I wanted it; followed by another verse with no slide (except at the very end .. not concentrating!).

Trumpet Fall

Set TrumpetFall voice and turn on MONO. The ease with which the trumpet fall happens depends on the Touch sensitivity Offset level in Voice Set (Default value is 64). I set this MP3 at 120 (full up).

Just hit a key roughly in the range of the 2 octaves above middle C with higher velocity. The effect happens more easily at higher TS values and does not appear to happen at all if TS is below about 56).

Again, care and experience is needed for this effect.

Den,

Ernest (Jacky) has done a Trumpet Fall in his piece Nadia .. at 1:50. Whether he has used your 'Trumpet Fall' feature you have described above I'm not sure, but it certainly makes the trumpet sound more realistic to make it do something like this.

Going back to Portamento and Pitch Bend, here's another example of using this.

First of all, I am NOT a piano player so this is not in my usual style. Because of the Portamento and Pitch Bend I had to revert to just banging the keys like a piano instead of playing them. I did this as an experiment, it is not really much good. These settings should be used sparingly.
OK, the technical details;
Set up: Keyboard transposed +3 Upper Octave -1 This brings it into the reasonable hearing range.
Style: Country Waltz @ 90. Kept that right through as I liked it.
MONO ON - or the Portamento wont work.

Button1:
R1: Aloha Guitar, Portamento @45, Pitch Bend @12, Volume 127
R2:Warm Electric Portamento @0, Pitch Bend @0, Volume 110
L: Tibia 16 + 4 on hold Volume 50

Button 2:
R1: Aloha Guitar, Portamento @50, Pitch Bend @12, Volume 127
R2: Jazz Vibes @ Portamento @0, Pitch Bend @ 0, Volume 110
L: Tibia 16 + 4 on hold Volume 50

Button 3:
R1: Aloha Guitar, Portamento @55, Pitch Bend @12, Volume 127
R2:Warm Electric Portamento @0, Pitch Bend @0, Volume 110
R3: French Musette, Volume 90
L: Tibia 16 + 4 on hold Volume 50

Button 4: Multitrack
R1: French Musette, Volume 90

Do a right-click to open this up in a New Tab.

So that is the settings for the registration. Pitch Bend works fine if you push the wheel as soon as you press the note. If you wait for a short time the effect is reduced. Seems that the Pitch Bend works from the time you press the note and dies away.
Have fun playing.
Regards, Den.

Great example of pitch bend. Love this singing and the accompaniment is great. Good example of the pitch bend.
