Fast USB Sticks

Postby barwonfan » 18 Jan 2023 01:47

To-day, at my U3A computer lessons I learnt how to tell a #2 from a #3. I have already known for a couple of years that one is blue and the other is black, but today, my tutor told me that you don't look at the surface colour of the USB stick; "you look down the spout." ; in other words look for the color at the end. I am having trouble wording the last couple of sentences I have just written, and I am hoping some kind member will come up with better words to describe the end of a USB stick. I also notice that my hub has blue colors where you stick in a usb. Also, my lap top computer has black ports where you stick in a USB.
By the way-- U3A stands for University of the third age. Is there one in your town?

I love listening to members performances on this forum and I ALWAYS turn off the speakers on my lap top and plug in my headphones.

USB 2.0 sticks are either white or black inside the stick connector opening. USB 3.0, which work at much faster speed, are coloured Blue

I think I am right in saying that the 3.0 will not work any faster than a 2.0 unless your computer has a dedicated 3.0 USB Port?

The only advantage is using a fast USB stick is when it is used on the computer for loading LOTS of files. You will never see the improvements when used on a keyboard. It is the operating that determines the slow speed not the interface.

Similar to the new USB 'C' connection that purports to be ten times faster than the USB 'B'. It is like having a ten lane highway going to a 2 lane gate. Your computer or keyboard can only handle its dedicated speed. Anyway, as fantastic as my brain works I doubt if I could notice the difference between any of them unless I was transferring multi-gigabytes of information. Just another gimmick to force you into buying the next generation of whatever.
