The Real Story of the Yamaha Keyboard

Part one

Many years ago when I was in the navy we went to Burma, Rangoon actually. We were to escort the Duke of Edinburgh on his tour of the Far East. Whilst there I had the opportunity to go on an elephant hunt. Come the morning of the adventure, six of us naval chaps were on the quarterdeck with our rifles awaiting the arrival of our host. Eventually a rickety old bus pulled up and an eminent Burmese gentleman alighted, trotted up the gangway, and confronted us with; “What are you doing with those guns? Put them away, someone may get hurt. What you need for an elephant hunt is a first aid box, binoculars and a radio.” (No mobile phones in those days.) That sounded logical.

We went and suitably armed ourselves with the required equipment and boarded the bus.

The Burmese gentleman then raced the bus at breakneck speed through the city and out into the country. After a while he stopped and invited us to follow him into the jungle. After about fifteen minutes’ walk we arrived in clearing where the Burmese gentleman told us to climb up into the trees, turn on our radios and hide. He then proceeded to produce a blackboard and chalk. Upon this board he wrote ‘2 + 2 = 5’ and then proceeded to hide in a tree.

After a short while a female elephant came into the clearing, looked at the board, started to laugh and went on her way. Five minutes later about twenty-five elephants came into the clearing all staring and laughing at the board. It was then our radios came to life and the Burmese fellow told us to open our first aid boxes. In there is a brown paper sick bag and tweezers. Now take your binoculars and look through them the wrong way around. All the elephants are tiny, so pick them up with your tweezers and put them into your paper bag.

Part two

Some years earlier the men from the Land of the Rising Sun heard about this phenomena and decided to go and investigate the situation. This they did and took the information back to their homeland. This instigated the production of little boxes with telescopes on the wrong way around to capture anything that they wanted. The Emperor, knowing this, instructed his men to capture the sounds of music. The men went far and wide capturing all the instruments that they could, saxophones, trumpets, pianos etc and when they brought them back they were put into a beautiful silver case. He was so proud of this achievement he explained it to his mother, “Ya Ma Ha ve got good sounds in my silver box.” This became known as a Yamaha keyboard.

Part three

Although the Emperor was pleased with his efforts he was still in a quandary as to having the best music in the world. He called his son “Hey, Sony, get your girlfriend Sue Zuki and go into the world and bring back the best music you can find.” The pair left on a great mission. They asked in all sorts of places to find the best music and their searches lead them to Wales. They flew to Heathrow, hired a car and drove to Newport. There they asked where the music was. They were told to go up the Rhondda Valley and there they would find the best music. So they drove on. They went to the Queen and to the Prince of Wales because these are the first two pubs you come to in Tonypandy. When they asked about the good music they were told to go to Cardiff Arms Park on Saturday and there they would hear the best music in the world. They asked how they should get there and they were told to get the train on Saturday, go to Cardiff and follow the crowds. Saturday morning early they caught the train to Cardiff and followed the crowd but ended up in Tesco supermarket as all the girls go shopping on Saturday mornings. Eventually they managed to get to the rugby ground and they heard the beautiful songs.

Returning to Tonypandy that evening they went to the pub to thank the people for directing them. However, one chap spoke up and told them if they really wanted to hear great music they should go to the Chapel on Sunday morning and listen to Bronwyn play the organ. That organ, they were told, was built by Gareth Williams in 1672 and it has only been played by the women of the family ever since. It is tradition.

To the chapel they went, together with their little black boxes, and heard Bronwyn thrash out the hymns at full volume. They were very impressed and captured the brilliant organ sounds to take home with them.

Arriving home again they put the great organ sounds into the silver box and played it for the Emperor. The Emperor was so impressed that he ordered that the silver boxes should be made for everyone in the world so that they could play and hear the best music in the world.

So that is how the Yamaha keyboards were born.
