Hi Ken A nice listen. I seem to recall a different version when I was in the choir but maybe mistaken. Keep safe. John

Hi Ken,

Interesting melody for this hymn! I am aware that a hymn is not like a pop song, which has a specific melody to go with the words. Hymns are written, and composers put music to the words, so there can be several 'tunes' to a hymn. Who was the composer of this one?

The below is the one we used to sing in the choir I was in, and I suspect JohnT that this is the same tune that you are referring to. Maybe it's an 'age' thing?

Now Thank We All Our God - J. S. Bach

Hi!
The score I used has 2 attributes. M Rinkart (1586-1649) and J Cruger (1598-1667) Hope this clears it up.

This is the version I remember from Sunday school. regards Ken S

Hi Ken,

More on hymns and the music that goes with them. On our wedding day (52 years ago now) my wife and I both chose a hymn for everyone to sing at the service .. a favourite for both of us.

Love divine all love's excelling
Joy of heaven to earth come down,
Fix in us thy humble dwelling,
All thy faithful mercies crown.

And then, as we neared the day, it dawned on us that the hymn as I knew it was not the same as the one my wife knew! So which tune did we have on the day? We have been racking our brains to remember which tune we had, and neither of us can remember. All I can say is that we didn't fall out over it at the time!

Here's the tune I associate with this hymn:

Blaenwern, Love Divine - Prince William and Kate Middleton Royal Wedding
Charles Wesley and William Penfro Rowlands; arranged by James O'Donnell
The Choir of Her Majesty's Chapel Royal
The Choir of Westminster Abbey.

My cousin Lawrence Wallington sings bass in the Westminster Abbey Choir.

And this is the one my wife, knew:

"Love Divine, All Loves Excelling" (HYFRYDOL)

Or it may have been the other way round! This is what happens as the years roll on!

My wife said she also knew another one, but not as well as the other two.

Love Divine, All Loves Excelling (Grace Community Church)
Congregational singing
Grace Community Church - Sun Valley, California
Text: Charles Wesley | Tune: BEECHER.

Hi Hugh what a coincidence. We had the same Love Divine. When it was played on the day it was a different verb to the one we knew. It didn’t spoil the day as we have lasted 50 years. We should have listened to it before our wedding. Will listen to the tunes later. John
