Hi Can anyone tell me which notes i should be playing for a cord D7Sharp5 (9Flat) Please.

D F# A# C Eb ???

I think I would play the D and the F# below middle C; not play an A at all (part of the D7 chord) but play A#, C and Eb higher up. This chord would then 'resolve' into D7 by dropping the A# to A and the Eb to D.

I always say, whenever you get these 'fancy' chords just play a 'straight' chord eg. D7 as it is probably the melody in the right hand (which are usually just 'passing' notes) which is creating the strange looking chord.

But then I know nothing about music theory. We need an expert to answer this question.

I'm with Hugh on this one. Look at the melody at the point where the chord is, and just before and afterwards. Chances are that the Eb, which is the b9, will be in the melody.

What chord you should actually play at that point depends on what instrument you're playing.

Organ: D bass on the pedals, F# A# C and Eb, but watch the melody notes. As soon as that #5 or b9 are gone, amend the chord to match.

Keyboard: Yamaha's AI system can probably do this, but I haven't got a keyboard here to check. It can certainly do D7#5 - F# A# C D. Other makes of keyboard should be able to do that chord as well but not put the b9 in.

Chord Construction

D + major interval = Gb (scale degree = 3rd)
Gb + major interval = A# (scale degree = sharp/augmented 5th)
A# + minor interval = C (scale degree = minor 7th)

So I'd play the notes......D Gb A# C
