Hi Den,

Well! Not just any old video that you have picked up from YouTube, but it's our very own Den showing us how to record in MIDI, then play back what we have recorded and add more to the recording.

I think that the way my AR80 organ records must have been the early days of MIDI. For starters, I can't record as audio. Having no hard drive in the organ to SAVE things to, we have to work with a floppy disk (1.44 MB) and there's no way you would get audio on that (typically, an MP3 file for a song is between 3 & 5 MB, and a WAV file 25 to 40 MB).

But I can record on what I reckon are 5 MIDI 'Channels'? These are Upper Manual; Lower Manual; Bass Pedals; Percussion; and Control. I think this was Yamaha creating their own MIDI Channels before the process became standardised. So I can set any of those to PLAY, and listen whilst I RECORD any of the others. A friend of mine once said that he could make a recording without playing the pedals .. and then get down afterwards on his hands and knees and play the bass pedals using his hands!

In particular, with being able to record the Upper and the Lower Manuals separately, I can 'multitrack' just the once and play a 'counter melody' on one manual and then play the 'melody' on the other afterwards. I then end up with something like this .. which I obviously couldn't do in one take as I am using my left hand to play the chords and the STYLE to the left of the split; and my right hand to play both the counter melody on the Lower (to the right of the split) and the melody (on the Upper). If I had three hands I could have done all this in one take.

Click the below to listen, and then click the 'back arrow' after to get back to this page.
Away in a Manger - STYLE + Counter Melody played on Lower Manual

And then add the Channel (?) for the Upper Manual whilst listening to the above.

Den .. I had noticed that you had recorded your video with a single microphone, so we were not hearing the same as you when you played your MIDI back. You must have been hearing the 'separation' of instruments from your 'Channels', whereas we were hearing everything playing on top of each other. No 'pan' to aid picking out the various instruments playing. And when you added your saxophone you had played the 'melody' again so the two sounds played together. I presume that using your MIDI Channels you would be able to record a different set of notes in each Channel and end up with something like this:

Johann Pachelbel - Canon in D | Keyboard multitrack
