Styles & Registrations wanted for PSR-S700. Help please!

Postby GeoffP » 23 Sep 2020 22:43

Hi Everyone. It's nice to be a brand new member. I am desperately seeking some help, but first a little about myself
I am a retired octagenarian dentist living near Bridgwater. My hobbies are crosswords, Probus Club, trading on Betfair and playing a rather down market but much loved Yamaha PSR-S700. And that's where the problem lies. In order to increase the number of styles, I have purchased a couple of USB sticks which have thousands of STY files that cannot be read by my machine. Any advice would be most appreciated.

Geoff,

When looking on the Yamaha Website the PSR-S700 and PSR-S900 have the same Owners Manual. So I think you can take it that anything you find out for the PSR-S900 will also apply to the PSR-S700.

The LINK to the PSR-S900 & PSR-700 Manuals is below. Click on this LINK to VIEW (as a PDF File); and at the top there is a DOWNPOAD arrow for you to download the Manual to your computer.

Do a right-click to open this up in a New Tab.
https://uk.yamaha.com/files/download/other_assets/5/322645/psrs900_en_om_b1.pdf

Anybody got a PSR-S700 or PSR-S900 or know anything about these two instruments?

When reading any PDF file you can make the text larger (and therefore easier to read) by holding down the Ctrl key and rolling the mouse wheel away from you (rolling it towards you will make it smaller). Do this slowly!

Hi Geoff

Styles made for one Yamaha keyboard will also play on another Yamaha keyboard. However, Yamaha's style file format (SFF1) changed in 2008 to a new format (SFF2).

I believe your keyboard is pre 2008 and it will be style format SFF1 BUT if the style files you have purchased are in SFF2 format I think This could be the reason they won’t play.

If you search the Internet I know there are programs out there that convert SFF2 styles to SFF1 which is what you may need.

Thanks Les.

Geoff. One of our Members, Jørgen (joso) runs his own website called The Unofficial YAMAHA Keyboard Resource Site. He has all sorts of programs he has devised for doing various things to do with Yamaha Keyboards. I have downloaded one that I use quite frequently for converting pictures (.JPG files) into PDF files. So I can scan music I have (several pages) and put them onto one PDF file which I can then display on a laptop screen for playing from.

This is his website:

http://www.jososoft.dk/yamaha/index.htm

He has one for converting SSF2 files into SSF1 files.

This is the page explaining about the Conveter:

Geoff. Maybe forget about converting those ones you have bought for the moment. If you are just looking for more Styles that will work on your PSR-S700 then in the PSR Tutorial Website you will find this:
Yamaha provided a utility, Voice Converter for Tyros2, that can convert T2 styles to a format that can be used on the PSR-S900 and PSR-S700. We applied that utility and converted 3,123 styles that PSR-S900/S700 owners can use to increase their style libraries. The style sets are provided in the zip files shown in the table below.

So there you go. Another 3,500 STYLES you can have on your PSR-700.

This is where you will find them. It says for PSR-900 but they also work on yours, the PSR-700. This is definitely the place to go to get more STYLES for your PSR-S700 keyboard.

Do a right-click to open this up in a New Tab
https://psrtutorial.com/sty/yamaha/psr-s900.html

Scroll down the page until you see the below (the below is just an 'image' of what's on the website page, so you can't click on the words below), and click on one. All the downloads are ZIP files, so you'll have to UNZIP them. Are you OK at doing that? If not, I can UNZIP them for you and give you a LINK where you can download them from 'as is'.

Image
Image

Scroll down a bit more and there are these.

Image

And there are even more further down.

3,500 more STYLES should keep you going for a bit!

Geoff,

I have downloaded that program from Jørgen's site and put your .STY files you sent me into it. The message that came up was that these .STY files are not Type 2 Style Files. So not able to convert them.

I then thought I would try one of those Style Files (ending in .sty) in my Tyros 4 .. and it worked just fine. It also set up some OTS Voices to go with the A, B, C and D Variations of the Style. This is what it sounded like (just the style .. no melody). But there was a LEFT VOICE allocated so that is part of what you are hearing.

Click the 'back arrow' after listening to get back to this page.
Geoff's Achy Breaky Heart Style played through a Tyros 4

Anybody got any ideas as to why this won't play through Geoff's PSR-S700?

Hi Hugh,

Your Tyros 4 has SFF2 style format and if the files Geoff has sent you work on the Tyros 4 they must be SFF2 files, I believe Geoff’s S700 supports SFF1 files only therefore unable to read the files.

Not sure why you are unable to convert the files because I have not seen or used the conversion program, sorry.

Thanks Les for keeping up with all this. Geoff sent me a few of his STYLE FILES so I could convert them for him, so I have downloaded Jorgen's SFF2 to SFF1 Converter program and this is what I get:

When I put the STYLE file in I get this:

So have sent Jørgen an email and asked if he has any suggestions as to what we can do next.

Geoff,

Going back to the PSR TUTORIAL website and looking at Styles For The PSR-S900/S700 I have downloaded the 300 STYLES from the top one in the list, Tyros Styles for the PSR-S900. One I have picked up from the list is Guitar Serenade, which is one I have on my Tyros 4 and have used it to play Beautiful Dreamer.

Have a listen to how the STYLE sounds, here:

After listening, click the back-button to get back to this page.
Beautiful Dreamer played on my Tyros 4 with the STYLE "Guitar Serenade"

I have Attached the STYLE Guitar Serenade below which is a .prs file. Can you download it please and try it in your PSR-S700 and see if it works? And if it sounds anything like my MP3 Style above? If you have a Memory Stick plugged into a USB Port of your computer, when you do a left-click on the attachment below you should be able to download the file straight onto it (it's normally the E drive). Basically, this is just a Waltz with a guitar on the 'off-beat'.

Geoff,

Den can send you loads of things that will work on your PSR-S700. You have my email address and phone numbers so just let me know what you want and I'll pass it on to him.

I know too that you would like to get those STYLES that you bought to work on your machine, so let's hope Jørgen can help with that one.

Have had a reply from Jørgen now, and he says this about the files that Geoff had bought:
Hi Hugh

Sorry for the delay in answering.

The two style files are SFF1, which means that they will run at all keyboards from the last app. 20 years.

There are no logical errors in the files.

Runs perfect at my PSR S750.

The files may need revoicing as PSR S700 might lack the voices defined in the style. Can be done in the keyboard or use my program at http://www.jososoft.dk/yamaha/software/revsty/index.htm

"Aint that a shame" uses only GM voices. Not a problem, but could be improved by revoicing.

Conclusion: Nothing wrong.

Best wishes
