Bringing music closer on Tyros - and other keyboards/organs.

Postby dentyr » 09 Dec 2022 04:15

This is generally how I brought my music closer when I was playing out. I drew up the design in AutoCad on my Win98 computer and made these bits from scraps in my workshop. Works well. After I had done that I posted the drawings and pics on a forum. Not long afterwards I saw very similar things made in Acrylic on ebay at about $35 or so. :D

My tablet sat on a piece of 3mm hardboard between the music stand and the tilt screen with a 170mm cube of foam to rest the tablet.
All my music sheets are pdf form on the tablet.

Den,

Well done you! For anyone who reads music you would only be able to read from large print music sheets when placed on the music stand in it's current position. You certainly wouldn't be able to read score from a tablet at that distance.

When you see demonstrations of Yamaha Keyboards on YouTube none of the demonstrators ever have any music up. Demonstrating different things the keyboard can do has to be done 'by ear' as there would be no written music you could follow. So the position of the music stand is never something a demonstrator would even consider.

Yamaha seem to think we all either 'play by ear' or have amazing eyesight and can read things at a distance. And this isn't just with their keyboards. My Yamaha AR80 organ has the music stand way at the back, on top of the wood running across the top of the organ .. and you have to look 'upwards' to read the music. Oh well!

I too use a tablet (iPad) to store my music and need the 'dots' in front of me to play anything! And I too need to bring the iPad closer in order to see the music more clearly.

This is what my Tyros 3 setup used to look like when I played from 'paper' music:

Image

The iPad mount I use is something I bought.
Here is a side view of it. It is fixed to the upright part of a microphone stand behind the keyboard.

Image

And below is what it looks like when I am playing from the digital music on my iPad. I also use a blue tooth 'page turner' foot switch (blue tooth, so no wires) to turn the pages. I can turn them either forwards or backwards.

Hi,

A now deceased member of the keyboard club made plastic mounts which replaced the originals and brought the music stand further forward. He sold them around the world.

Click this link below to see how these plastic mounts have brought the music sheets much closer (and higher).

Hello John T,

As I posted, I designed these, drew them up and made them from scraps in my workshop. I posted the drawings and pic onto another forum long time ago. Should have got them made and marketed them or put a copyright on them and made some money. What you see in acrylic is exactly what I drew up and made in wood. I also designed and made a brace for the music stand for the S900 as that was too floppy with a music book on it.

Here's another video, by Morrie Reece on how to create a replacement Yamaha PART that will bring your music sheets closer and higher so you can read them more easily.

Morrie Reece is an American .. and their language is slightly different to ours. For SCREWS read BOLTS. BOLTS have a fixed diameter and are fastened with NUTS. SCREWS taper away to a point.

Homemade Tyros 5 music stand extension.
This short video explains how to build the music stand extension I have on my Yamaha Tyros 5 keyboard. Over a dozen people sent me emails asking about it. My friend Dave in an engineer who built it for me. You can use the still pictures to measure the angles if you want to build your own.

Homemade Tyros 5 music stand extension.
This would put a lot of strain on the connections into the back of the tyros. There is no support for the stand other than the two mounting pins in the back of the keyboard. Would worry me.

The AR80/100 showing the original position of the music rest.

Image

I have made my own Music Stand to fit on top of my AR. This brings the music forward, and lower.
Here is a photograph of it both in position and in use.

Image

You can see that I have finished it to match the case of the AR.
Some may be interested in how I constructed it, so here goes.

First of all, here are 2 more shots of what it looks like when in place on my AR

Image

Image

I have also prepared a PDF document giving a description and outlining the construction details of my music stand, which you can read below.
If the document does not show, REFRESH the page .. or click on the LINK underneath to go there directly.

The precise details and measurements for cutting the separate bits that you need to make it are in this next PDF document below.
If the document does not show, REFRESH the page .. or click on the LINK underneath to go there directly.

Here is a picture of the parts before assembly.

Image

And this one of the complete unit before placing on the AR.

Image

Here are a couple of shots showing part assembly that you may find helpful.

Obviously, I have no patent on this and you are free to make one for yourself, if you wish. Equally, feel free to use my idea and adapt it to suit your needs or skill levels.

I have also installed some mini-lights which light up the front of the organ.
