Florian Hutter Organ Technique

I know he is very popular and quite rightly so. I wanted to post this to highlight his technique of
playing on the one manual with both hands. It looks like his left hand is doubling the melody with
his right hand which is also filling in the harmony.
I want to have a go at this myself so I better get practicing.
I know of another technique often used by jazz pianists called drop 2 voicings which takes the second note of the chord and
plays it on the bottom. I want to explore that as well at some point.

Brian,

Thanks for spotting this clip and posting it. Food for thought! Watch how he uses the expression pedal too. Never still! This is what gives his music such a 'lift'! I wonder how many of us 'organists' can play like this?

Further to the locked hands and drop 2 voicings, I
found this. I will have a closer look at this myself and
post something on the performance when I can.

Brian,

Another brilliant video to watch. I find these chord progressions quite fascinating, and playing the tune in octaves really brings the melody to the fore. Something really worth trying.

Then 'dropping' the tune by picking up the second note of the chord running downwards, playing it in the left hand whilst removing that note from the right hand gives another dimension to the sound of this piece. I know from talking to 'theatre organists' that they don't like to repeat notes in both hands as that gives a 'double dose' of that one note. Different to playing in octaves as it is OK to give a 'double dose' to the melody.

Brian. I just have to say that this is a most exciting concept, and something I have never thought about. I shall be looking at how I can incorporate some of these ideas into how I play. Hugh

Hi Hugh,
I have already done a bit of practice on the locked hands in the middle eight of a tune. Like learning anything new,
I am finding it difficult. Even more so when adding a bass line on pedals.
I hope to post something soon. :D :D

Peter Haywood on utube has a number of videos showing various methods on these lines. I expect Hugh has seen him at concerts. Ken
