New Challenge Music Written in the 1950`s

Postby Brian007 » 17 Mar 2016 08:43

Hi All,

Keith and I are now taking turns in setting the challenges for this section and its my turn this time, so here we go.

The 1950's were a time of changes and the music of the decade both reflected the cultural changes that were happening
in the world and this decade was a time of innovation that helped to influence everything that we listen to today.

This new challenge is all about music that was written in the 1950s, it can be of any genre as long it was first written in the 1950s
please use google to check when it was written as this whats required not when it was recorded or when it was a hit.
What would be good is if we could all play one number from as many different years in the 1950s as possible.

If possible please included the song writers / composers of the music and the year in your posts

As per usual here`s my first one, "A Teenager in Love" is a song written by Doc Pomus and partner Mort Shuman
and was written in 1959 originally sung by Dion and the Belmont's and released in March 1959

A Teenager In Love - remember it well. Well played and an enjoyable listen.

My first effort is from 1956 and was written by Gene Vincent and "Sherriff" Tex Davis who helped in getting the song out to the record producers. Performed by Gene Vincent the song is "Be-Bop-A Lula,"

Hi all,

A complete change from me this time a nice ballad love song called " When I fall in Love "
as sung by Nat Cole. The song's composer was Victor Young and as far as I can tell the year was 1952.
Hope you enjoy.

Hi Brian. Nice clarinet and arrangement of When I Fall In Love. Enjoyed it.

My next one was a prissy sort of song when it was written and I do not think that it has improved with age. Nevertheless it was very popular in the mid 50's and was written in 1956 by Paul Vance and Lee Pockriss and first recorded by Perry Como. "Catch a Falling Star" is the title.

"Tulips From Amsterdam" was written in 1956 by Ralf Arnie with English lyrics by Gene Martyn. Played for you on a Dutch accordion for a bit of added authenticity!!

Hi Keith,

I can remember watching Perry Como singing that on the TV way back in the day
I nice choice of voices and accompaniment.

Tulips form Amsterdam, the accordion was very really sounding, I could just about
visualize you sitting by one of the canals with your beret on head busking ??

Enjoyed listening to both of them.

Thanks for the kind comments gentlemen.
For this mornings effort I have gone right back to 1950 to a song written by Terry Gilkyson, Richard Dehr and Frank Miller. It was most popularly recorded in 1956 by Dean Martin and also Dave King.

The sentiments of my last effort - Memories are Made of This are very relevant to this next entry. As soon as I saw it in the book I was transported back to when I was about thirteen and went to Saturday afternoon dancing classes at Pearl Pailings Ballroom in Halifax. I was always paired off with the tallest girl in the room - Angela, as I recall and particularly enjoyed the cha cha to this tune "Kiss Me Honey Honey" which was written in 1958.

Hi John and Brian. I enjoyed both versions of Till and have to say that for a tenth of the memory used the mp3 would be very difficult to tell apart from the wav. Thought that the lighter orchestration after the break was more appealing but enjoyed it all.

So Brian you remember Dave King. What about Yana (Jana?). I was too young to take notice of the spelling, if I ever saw it, but do seem to think that she impressed my father. Enjoyed your version of "All I Have To Do Is Dream". Well played and voiced.

Well folks it is Sunday and I am off to God's own county so only one offering from me today. As it is Sunday I have dusted off the Classical organ for "I Believe" which was written in 1952 by Ervin Drake, Irvin Graham, Jimmy Shirl and Al Stillman.

Hi Keith A nice clean simple arrangement with a lovely organ. Enjoyed it. John

Regarding Till I recorded it in wav and was transfering it to box and MP3. Put it on the site as wav by mistake, then MP3 and asked Mike to put it in one post. Clear as mud. John

A nice arrangement of that tune, with a nice sweet sounding organ, and played with a lot of feeling

Here is another one from the Everly Brothers "Bye Bye Love" is a popular song written by Felice and Boudleaux Bryant and published in 1957.

The hardest part of doing this number was hitting the break button on the first beat of the bar for the break to sound correct

What a happy and breezy way to say "Bye Bye Love." I guess that he must have been glad to see the back of her/it. Well played and nice sounds.

My next one is from 1958 and in a very different vein. One of the great protest songs of the era as the movers and shakers tried to change the idiotic things of 1950's life. Racial issues, wars and intolerance in so many ways from unmarried mothers to homosexuality. Written by Pete Seeger and Lee Hays in 1958 it was sung at many demonstrations in an attempt to knock some sense into governments all over the world. It is, of course, "If I Had A Hammer."

Having recorded "Release Me" which according to the music is copyright 1956 Google tells me that it was written in the 1940 but the rights to the tune were bought and sold so the copyright was 1956 for an earlier tune.

Anyway just a few page turns away is this one written by a Mr Elvis Presley and a certain Vera Matson. Surely not the wife of a colleague back in the seventies! Further research tells me that this was a pseudonym for Ken Darby - actually the maiden name of his wife. Anyway "Love Me Tender" was written in 1956 and is from the film of the same name.

Hi Keith,

Two very good post, I seem to remember the version of "If I had a Hammer" by Trini Lopez more than the Pete Seeger one
which was more up tempo, but and good version of that song.

Love Me Tender, the strings were really lush ans sounded so good, as did the rest of the tune
a very nice arrangement and well played.

Well Brian it would seem that the 1950's is either too early or too late for some of our usual contributors. I hope that they are all well and not contributing because they are out of sorts. I think that you, an d others, will enjoy the organ sounds of my next one. The music was written in 1953 by Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn with lyrics by Johnny Mercer. It is, of course, "Satin Doll."

Written in 1952 this next one by Don Wolf and Bill Davies is what I consider to be quite a difficult little tune both in chords and rhythm. Most notably recorded by Nat King Cole it is "Azure te" (Paris Blues).

Hi ALL,

A slight change of plan for me here, the tune I am posting now I have done before when I had the Korg PA900.
The song is "Diana" written and made famous by Paul Anka in 1957 recorded in May 1957 at Don Costa studio in New York.
The song has been covered by many artists in the past, but the original Paul Anka 1957 recording reached number one on the Billboard.

Recorded on the Tyros 5 using 60s vintage pop style at 136 bpm please enjoy

Hi Keith,

Many thanks for the comments,

The registration changes are all done in sequence with one of the two foot pedals I have,
the second foot pedal controls the Rotary effect for the organ switching between fast and slow.
I also have a expression pedal which I can set to control various different things in each registration
Bit like the bionic man

This next one is totally out of left field for this forum but I think that Brian, in particular, might like it. It is a simple twelve bar blues written be Elmore James in 1953. The music says medium tempo but I have slowed it down to 72 bpm and I just picture a small combo late at night burbling away in a smoke filled bar. It is "Can't Stop Lovin."
