Challenge Male Names

Postby KRUG » 21 Jan 2016 09:22

The title of this challenge may sound rather clumsy but the challenge is:

To record especially for this challenge a piece of music that contains a proper male name anywhere in the title of a song or in the song itself. A proper name is always spelled with a capital letter and could include words like John, or Fred or a male style of address like Mr. Smith or General Custer.

Also acceptable would be words like He, Him, His, Boy and Brother but only if they are in the title of the song and stand in place of a name to signify a particular person e.g This Boy or He Loves Me.

There are thousands of possibilities ranging from hymns, folk and classical to pop so lets see if we can get a really interesting range of music. I look forward to hearing your efforts.

To start us off I have gone to the Beatles - well you can't go wrong doing that! I have chosen "For The Benefit Of Mr. Kite" and messed about with the instrumentation of a style accompaniment to give it a rather exotic flavour. I hope that you enjoy it.

Hello Keith and Ken,

I enjoyed listening to both of your tunes this morning - great sounds and playing from you both :)

Listening inspired me to 'knock something together quickly' for this challenge - tongue in cheek ... this one is called 'Walt Meets Ludwig Van B' :D

Not just one male name but two .... eh!

Hi Ken and Mike, I enjoyed both of your contributions and am most intrigued by Mike's entry. I thought that the Walt was going to refer to Walter Carlos of Switched of Bach fame but decided that this was not so. Could it be Walt Stoneham? More information please on what equipment was used etc. to make this excellent recording.

Hi Keith,
A fine start, very psychedelic. :D :D

Hi Ken,
A Gordon was very nicely played. :D :D

Hi Mike,
A very original take, well played. :D :D

Here is Bill Bailey, played on my Yamaha Keyboard in two stages,
The main tune and then I added the piano because I wanted to include the left hand piano chords.

Hi Brian. What a great version of Bill Bailey. Well played and arranged it really got the feet tapping.

Back to proper organ sounds for the next one - "All Creatures Of Our God And King." John will certainly know it but not so sure about Brian007.

Hi Everyone Just practicing Bill Bailey but Brian beat me to it may do it later. So I tried this one do not know all the tune or what style so I settled for a German March may not be suitable but its the playing that counts. Here it is Judas Maccabaeus so hope you enjoy.John

Hi Brian.
A well played version of Nowhwere Man, nice voices. :D :D

Hi Ken,
A fine version of Danny Boy. I have in the past experimented with that tune and I remember writing a Latin Jazz version with some of the less common chords in it.
If I can find the music, I will give it a go.

Hi Brian, You can't go wrong with the Beatles and I enjoyed being reminded of Nowhere Man.

Ken that was an excellent arrangement of Danny Boy and sounded great with the theatre organ sounds. It just shows why Easy Play books are to be avoided if you can possibly help it.

My next offering is a very common folk song which I think I remember singing in primary school. It tells of the boss arriving home late one night to find no sign of the Mrs. He soon learns that she has left his mansion and wealth to run away with the Gipsy Davey and his big guitar!!! This is "Gipsy Davey."

Hi Brian Another good Beatles number which I have not heard for a while. I see you have found another guitar in the loft. Nice sounds and style. Enjoyed it. John

Hi Ken One of my favorites always liked to play it. It was good to hear without any accompaniment and you captured the mood of the tune. A very enjoyable listen. John

Hi Keith ,
I enjoyed Gypsy Davey, well played.

Hi John,
Oh Johnny made for a very pleasant listen, nicely done.

As I mentioned earlier, I harmonised Danny Boy using jazz style chords.
I have just played the melody very basically to allow the chords to stand out.
I have called it Latin Danny
