Hi Keith. Liked your Johny.
Here is one that not sure it fits the bill. BILITIS is supposed to come from an ancient Greek city and was made into a french film based on a poem of that name.

Hi ALL

Off to the Capital of England with this one, Streets of London by Ralph McTell
must admit for some strange reason struggling with timing and beat on the song ?
I blame it on the Bossa Nova :P

Hi BrianF, The only time I have heard Johnny Lad was in folk clubs 40 or 50 years ago when the audience joined in the singing with a guitarist/singer leading. I doubt that you could do that at the pace of a jig but it was good to hear how it was done north of the border.

My next effort is definitely an English piece. We sing it at Citizenship Ceremonies in Sunderland when the immigrants who have jumped through all of the hoops are formally welcomed as citizens of the UK. I think that it is also sung at rugby matches!!! It is of course "Jerusalem."

Hi Kens, searched for five minutes to find any reference to a place called BILITIS and failed. It is the name of an association for lesbians and I suspect the film Bilitis has a lesbian theme. Lesbos is of course a Greek island which gives us the word lesbian. I thought it sounded more like an unpleasant condition of one nether regions but I have to say the music is very pleasant and was well played.

Hi Keith I did play it faster than normal, it was just a rough demo.
Here are the Clancy Boys singing it, still quite lively.

This is awkward to play the melody against the bass pedals rhythm. I couldn't hold it in places. I definitely need more practice to get it up to scratch. There is a bit of hesitation and stuttering in places.
I will post it again at a later date when I have polished it up a bit.

Hi John,
Two nicely played and voiced tunes.
Good luck with the grand kids, I have had my granddaughters for the last ten days.( 3yrs and 5yrs.) Thank the Lord I am taking them home tomorrow. :)
I didn't want to use them as an excuse for my poor performance of San Jose but they were running in and out and yapping in my ear the whole way through it.

Jerusalem is always very rousing. Good one and Johns killarney he beat me to it as I was on verge of having a go at it. He made a better job of it than I did. And always liked Rose of Athens . Remember seeing N Moskari on stage singing it. Years ago. Thanks guys Ken

Hi! Brian.
To avoid me putting my foot in it, can you please clarify. Are any of the following words in the lyrics acceptable
World, Desert, Shore, Sea, Sky, Cloud. Sun, House, Lane, Road, Meadow. Heaven. Isis. Moon, Stars. Mountains.
I find stacks of songs with them in but dont want to waste time and space on the forum with any not fitting regards Ken

Hi Brian D.

Thought The Way To San Jose was a very good performance of not an easy tune rythm wise with some good voices.

Hi John T.

You made a real good job of those two tune you posted, particularly liked the Irish one, well played.

Hi Ken,

Most of the things you mentioned in your post are sort of very general things, what would be best is if they were named places in the real world,
like for rivers, = Thames, places = London, Countries = America, States of America = New Orleans, Scotland , Ireland that kind of thing,

Here`s a couple of links that may help , http://ericssonglists.blogspot.co.uk/20 ... ities.html

http://www.amiright.com/names/music-places/

I appreciate that some of those listed may not be to your or my type of music but its just to give you an Idea

Hi Brian, I thought that was a very good effort with San Jose which I can imagine is rather difficult.

John, Great to have two good posts from you. Kick the grand kids out into the back garden - it will certainly damp their spirits. You can then give us another tune.

I do not think that our world tour has taken us to the Middle East yet so here we go. Picture the scene. Black slaves sitting around the camp fire after a hard day picking cotton when a trumpet is heard in the distance accompanied by a small combo. They come nearer and as the men recognise the tune they begin to sing "When Israel was in Egypt's land ..." Soon the others join in and express their sorrow until the musicians go past and fade away into the distance.
The song is "Go Down, Moses."

https://app.box.com/s/x0bnyud8icwqzmdjex52kvbdx0d79e93

Sorry for the musical stumble part way through - did not notice anything so wrong as i recorded it and certainly not part of the script.

The theme music from Bilitis is a beautiful piece. Very nicely played and arranged.
p.s. I must watch the movie, I usually enjoy French films. :D :D
Brian

Hi Keith,
I love Paul Robeson singing Go Down Moses. I enjoyed your version.
The Waves of the Danube is also a very nice tune, well played. :D :D

Here is a quick one before I take my Granddaughters back to their mother in Stirling. (love them but after 10 days, it is time they were home  )

Hi Brian. Spanish flea was good had my feet tapping. Have a nice rest put your feet up. We have two grandchildren every day not overnight, just tonight. Then we have four three days a week. Transporting them to school, had to buy a second car. Enough of that. Keep the music coming, most enjoyable. John

Hi Brian, nice to hear another one from the States. There are so many American songs naming towns etc. that I thought we would be inundated with them. Sounded good.

Hi Kens, Where else can you go on such a trip around the world and with such a range of musical styles. Yellow Rose of Texas to Grand Opera in a heartbeat. I am all ready to march out of the room but must make a musical journey to Italy first.

Hi John, Glad you enjoyed Arrivederci Roma and that you have got your recording studio back. While I was away i nipped over to Argentina and asked them not to cry for me but just got puzzled looks. Tried to keep it simple with just a basic Argentinian tango with flutes and guitar. I hope that you enjoy "Don't Cry For Me Argentina."

Glad you are enjoying the trip John. That word trip got me thinking of other connotations so looked down the back of the settee for an old sugar lump and went tripping to Strawberry Fields. A rather free version with no style, accompaniment or whatever. Just me having a trip and pressing keys and buttons as I go to "Strawberry Fields."

This is a mystery. I was flipping through the index of my digital music file and saw this title. "Moon Over Naples" by Bert Kaempfert, Charles Singleton and Eddie Snyder. The verse begins "Wine and guitars, moon over Naples and a million stars. A new one for me so I sat down and played it and found that the tune I know as Spanish Eyes seems identical. Was that in one of the Kenneth Baker instruction books? Anyway a nice tune and it fits the bill so here is "Moon Over Naples" sung to some Spannish bird gazing at Vesuvius!

https://app.box.com/s/me5n1ww8183qwqtrlenf1x34pya32fvp

Keith

A bit of research tells me that Moon Over Naples was an instrumental written and performed in 1965. Words were added in 1966 and it became known as Spannish Eyes becoming a big hit for Al Martino.
