New Challenge (Popular Christmas Songs) Dec 2015

Postby Brian007 » 02 Dec 2015 08:38

Hi,

This challenge is all about popular Christmas songs, in other words song that have been in the popular music charts around Christmas time
as opposed to Traditional Christmas Carols. So here`s a link to give you some idea what we are looking for http://www.billboard.com/charts/hot-holiday-songs
please note they need not be on this list its just a guide, good luck and please enjoy this challenge

To start things of here my version of "Rocking around the Christmas Tree" by Brenda Lee https://app.box.com/s/gq1ogud84ee7pkxnijnvfmbbyuoypqt8

Apparently I managed to chop the last 3 seconds off  will try and sort it out later when I have more time

I am having Internet problems but managed to rock along with Brian' excellent offering. Unfortunately Ken's would not load but I think that the problem is at my end as it took ages for my first tune to upload to Box. Nevertheless here is my take on "Walking In The Air."

Hi Ken,

A very nice version of "When a Child is Born" good voices and well played,
you do very well with the organ you use to get such good results.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hi Keith,

A good performance of "Walking In The Air" some sweet sounding voices and a good steady
style made for a plesant listening experience.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I think we will have to expect a lot of repeat posting of tunes as there isn`t really a huge amount of Christmas song
that we can all play and have access to the music to play, but variety is the spice of life.

Hi Brian,
Very well voiced and played, a cracking number to start off the challenge. :D :D
I will post on here but I do think it should be remembered that there is an existing board for Christmas tunes, and it shouldn't be ignored. :)

Hi Ken, Very well played and arranged. :D :D

Hi Guys,
I simultaneously videoed and recorded this to mp3. I am posting the mp3 here and the video in the carol board.
I played this medley last year on the Orla organ, I used the Yamaha this year.
It's Winter Wonderland followed by Slade's very popular Merry Christmas Everybody.

Hi Brian - there was a bit of everything in that medley. Good sounds and well played.

Hi Kens - a very individual version of that popular latin (originally) Christmas song. Individuality is good.

I have only recently found this song from the pen of Leslie Bricusse. He wrote it for the musical Scrooge and it tells of the sadness of poor people looking in the festive windows of shops that they could never afford to enter. The song then cheers up as the real Christmas is remembered. Lots of lovely minors which eventually resolve. I hope that you enjoy "Christmas Children."

This is a much more lighthearted piece and Brian could probably manage a jig to it on the new bedroom carpet. I hope that we do not get one but this is "A Marshmallow World" from 1949.

Hi John, A brave attempt at quite a difficult song timing wise. The trumpet section was great.

Hi Kens, a very different approach to when I play it and very refreshing for that.

This one is from 1935 and should probably be done as a swing or foxtrot but just to be different I went for a bossa. Well I have heard some long endings but I think that this takes the biscuit. Anyway "I'm Going Home For Christmas" happens to be true. Is it just me or is there a strong hint of Dad's Army in this?

Hi Ken

p.s. It is my understanding that the colonel told song writers to credit Elvis as a co writer or he doesn't record the song.

Do you remember Ruby Murray? If so you will probably remember this Christmas hit she recorded in the mid 50's - "The Very First Christmas Of All."

Hi Keith,

A good old Bing Crosby favorite of mine, you made an excellent job of that both the playing and the voicing
a nice easy seasonal tune to listen to. Thanks for posting.

I think most people ( ok the 5 or so of us ) must be busy as there`s not a lot of posts this time around in this challenge
I know I have been really busy in the house and now its Christmas present shopping :? so its understandable.
