New Challenge - Flowers/Plants

Postby Brian007 » 05 Nov 2015 07:48

Hi all,

Ken requested a challenge for Flowers, I have taken the liberty to open it out to Plants so the challenge is any song or tune with any plant name in the title.
Plants can include any of the following. Flowers, Shrubs, grasses, vegetables, trees, and their fruits basically anything that grows in the ground .
Anyway lets how many we can manage to find and post.

Heres one to start it off, Recorded by Lead Belly in 1940, "Cotton Fields" has been covered by various artist including the Beach Boys and now me 8)

Having just posted Paper Roses I turned the pages in the book and came to "Comin' Thro' The Rye." This is done in a fusion style where you have to imagine the pipers of the Black Watch going on exercise in Bavaria and ending up in a Beer Keller on the Saturday night.

HI Everyone. Just had a go at this one. Takes me back to the big fairground at Houghton feast. With all the shows ,roundabouts, cocoanut shys. WE used to walk miles to go to it. Over 50 years ago. All that candy floss, chips, hot dogs. It is still going but only a very few stalls.I have tried to play Bunch of cocoanuts. Lots of dampness but enjoyed playing it. John

Sorry to say that I have never been to Houghton Feast but when I was about ten won five coconuts from six throws at a fair on Anglesey - a bit like winning the lottery but have not managed that! As you say a little bit of damp but there always is here in the North East. An interesting interpretation which I enjoyed.

Hi Guys,
I haven't had a chance to listen to all of them yet, I will do when I have time. I am pushed for time this morning as I have to go out but I quickly recorded this tune when my wife was out walking the dog. Here is the " Bluebell Polka" with at least one wrong note. :)

Hi Brian D.

I don`t know about duff notes that sounded pretty good to me, with some good voicing and a nice beat to it

Hi Guys,
I have now listened to everyones tunes,
I enjoyed all of them.
Brian with country sounds, ken with lovely organ tones. I haven't seen John's coconuts so I can't judge how lovely they are but I enjoyed the Brassy performance.
Keith, Paper Roses I remember well also an enjoyable and very original take on Coming through the Rye.

Have just listened to the latest offerings from Kens and the two Brians and some jolly good recordings they are. Kens tune "The Last Rose of May" is a new one for me and I enjoyed it very much. Brian seems to have got the twangy guitar off to a T and BrianD's Bluebell Polka certainly gets the feet tapping.

Now, " I haven't seen John's coconuts so I can't judge how lovely they are" and I certainly have no wish to find out. Particularly so as "I've Never Seen a Straight Banana" which is the title of my next offering. Some of you will remember Jimmy Edwards and this is a comedy song he recorded.

Hi Brian, There are so many songs with flower names in them and as Kens says lots of roses. I am trying to keep away from the obvious ones so I will take you on a little trip to Ireland to have a listen to "My Wild Irish Rose."

Hi John,

Nice one, some good voices and a good steady beat and rhythm all made for a sweet little number which you played well. Staying on the sweet theme,
Sugar beet, cultivated Beta vulgaris, is a plant whose root contains a high concentration of sucrose. It is grown commercially for sugar production, and
"Sugar, Sugar" is a pop song written by Jeff Barry and Andy Kim. It was originally recorded by the Archies, a bubble gum pop band formed by a group
of fictional teenagers in the television cartoon series The Archie Show. It reached number one in the US.

P.S not the correct ending as I could not find all the music so just made one up

Hi John, An enjoyable down beat version of Clementine with some pleasing voices. Was it Popeye who used to sing that?

Hi Brian, still twanging away on that guitar and making it sound good. I assume that you have found the transpose button to achieve the impressive key changes. Will have to try that.

This morning I have another Irish folk song for you. It is a lovely gentle tune and the words drip with sexual innuendo. The proper title is, "A Bunch of Thyme" though I have always known it by the words, "Let No Man Steal Your Thyme."

the transpose button YES I freely admit to using every labour saving device available on the Tryos just gives things a little lift and variety in the music
