Hi Brian, What an excellent start, that really got the feet tapping. Very well played.

I think that it is very probable that people might find that many tunes from the 30's-50's have a connection to a musical that you have never heard of. A bit of Googling might surprise you.

I found this little ditty in one of the Buskers books and first discovered that it was sung by Bing Crosby and then that it was in the musical film "Double or Nothing." Also covered by Frank Sinatra. It was a big hit in the late 30's. I hope that you enjoy, "The Moon Gets in My Eyes."

Hi Keith,

Many thanks for the kind comments,

Its not a tune I am familiar with , I do seem to recall the melody line from somewhere ?
That was a good version and I really enjoyed listening to it, a good choice of voicing and you played it very well.

This song is from the musical "Paint Your Wagon." I decided to do it in a beaty sort of style that you could dance to. Having done it I think that it would be better without a style and with more expressive instrumentation. It is, of course, "I Talk To The Trees."

Hello fellow challengers,
Brian, you made a good job of "The lady is a Tramp" nicely done.
Keith, I enjoyed both of your tunes but my preference was for "I Talk to the Trees" A jolly kind of tune, nicely played.
Tony, A fine selection from "South Pacific"

Some excellent entries on the first day.

Rev. Tony. Nice to hear a well played recording of a live performance.

John T. Brought back memories of a school production well over thirty years ago. Good registrations and no dampness - excellent.

Brian D. It is always nice to hear a piano well played and "Somewhere" brought out the very best in the pianos tones.

Thanks to you all for taking part - can you find another?

I am sure that you will all have realised by now that music is, for me, a source of many memories. Over sixty years ago my mother, for a special treat, would collect my sister and I from junior school and take us on the bus into the town centre to go to the cinema. When we were in our seats she would serve tea from her shopping bag - sandwiches and a drink and we would be ready for the start of the film. I particularly remember the musical 'The Student Prince' with Mario Lanza doing the singing for Edmund Purdom who played the prince. This song "I Believe In God" was very powerful and I hope that I have done it some kind of justice.

Hi Kens, Mission Impossible sounded great in every respect but the film is "One of a series of Spy Thrillers" and not a musical. Just to clarify the Challenge is to play A PIECE OF MUSIC FROM A MUSICAL not A PIECE OF MUSIC FROM A FILM. I hope that you do no mind that correction and will be spurred on to play us something from a MUSICAL. It will be worth waiting for.

The music for this was still on the piano so I gave it a quick a run through on the organ before storing it away.

I was very disappointed when I saw the film version of Les Miserables as the music was poor in comparison to the stage version. Never mind the music is good so this evening I give you "Castle on a Cloud." This switches frequently between 3/4 and 2/4 so the rhythm box is out of the question.

Hi Keith,
The piano version was technically more difficult to play as I played it note for note as written whereas the organ version was the melody line along with chords. I thought I was getting more expression into the organ version. I prefer the organ version. (please excuse the over use of the word version  )

I enjoyed your rendition of "Castle on a Cloud." very nice sounds.

Another great version of that classic a pleasure to watch and listen to, and yes PJ Prody did do it and split his trousers if I remeber Rightly.

Hi Keith.

Castles in the cloud a great rendition of that tune, didn`t miss the rythm box at all the great voices made up for it.

Poor old Brian has got the man flu and no doubt rather like the character played by Topol in "Fiddler on The Roof" feels that the whole world is against him. Here are two tunes from that musical. the first is "Fiddler on the Roof" in which Topol's gloom is personified as the fiddler on his roof. The final solo violin sums him up, "It might not mean a thing.......But then again it might!"

https://app.box.com/s/fxwe5xflyxxm4g0b42wldnhaws3593n2

Realising that he has little influence on the fortunes of his family he goes to to pray and asks God to look after and care for his family in the "Sabbath Prayer."

I hope that these two offerings make you feel a bit better - after all somebody is always worse off than you.
