Why is modern music so bad?

Some comments from under the video:
I'm 17, and personally, I don't understand today's pop music, there is no movement, boring choruses and the idea of bridges or instrumental solos is practically extinct. Personally I love those older rock bands that really wanted to say something through more than lyrics.

Older generations never understand young people's music. But then music (sound) is just noise anyway.

I grew up in the 80's loving 60's rock and 80's pop. I was a teenager in the 80's who couldn't get enough of The Beatles and the Beach Boys.. Good music is good music.

Any comments about 'Modern Music' please do a POSTREPLY.

I think BAD is the wrong interpretation. Different perhaps. In all aspects of our life we are shaped by our environment. In later years I have edged more towards classical music. Is it because my mother was a concert grade pianist and loved classical? Every day she played the overture to Poet and Peasant from memory. Quite a feat as its over 15 minutes long. I hated it but some 30 years ago I recorded self playing it on the organ. I realised it was an old equivalent of Bohemian Rhapsody. Full of different genres. So Freddy Mercury, for me, was a genius.
So we are all different. Our choice of food, clothing, holidays to name a few. So lets have your views! Ken S.

This is how it used to be done. None of this grabbing 'samples' and putting them in to create the backing.
The music was full of harmony, with interesting chord progressions that one just wanted to hear over and over again.

Not all modern music is bad. Only the garbage that emanates from the US and, dare I write it, from the UK.
That is why I have moved mainly to Austrian/ Swiss/ Tyrolean music. Twanging guitars, Hip Hop and Rap are not on my menu.
The Seekers grabbed it for me. Love their music, I have 2 of their books and I must admit, not too easy to play with the change of key in their harmony.
(ps. They are Australian :D )

Nice MUSIC, for me anyway. I can't play rap on my T4. :D

My favourite era for music was the 70’s, being born in 1960, my teenage years took me through the glam and disco era.

I don’t quite follow today’s pop music. My Apple Music playlists are quite lengthy in separate catagorys covering 60’s, 70’s, 80’s and 90’s. I have a wide taste in music from jazz, classic and always listening out for decent new comers. Artists like Nick Cave, who knows how to write lyrics and perform very well. Some of this modern stuff, not all of it, but most of it just makes no sense. I’m not looking forward to Artificial Intelligence once it emerges to completely ruin things for true professional artists.

But I particularly enjoy listening out to performers on forums like this and especially their own compositions. Hidden talent!

Music has to have four main components.
It has to have a MELODY.
It has to have a RHYTHM.
It has to be REPEATABLE
And it has to be pleasing to the ear.
The two pieces I picked that really grab me with the first bars are
“Dream” and “Liebestraum”
The opening chords to Dream C, CM7, B7,C. Em7 WOW!!!!
The opening chords to Liebestraum, F, A7, D7, G7.
So when I hear the opening of a song, if it does not grab me then I suppose it just floats by.

My playing has a lot to answer for.

Hello Den,

Here! here! I totally agree with your sentiment. Hit the nail on the head.

We know when a piece of music is going to be good from the opening. There a pieces that can give you goose pimples as it progresses and builds up with strings, like Liebestraum or certain movie sound tracks.

Andre Rieu plays exceptional music. And different styles of music such as Jean Michel Jarre or Mike Oldfield’s tubular bells as it builds up towards the end. Loren Alred, really hit that spot when she sings ‘Never Enough’. The lyrics, the slow quiet start building up to a powerful middle and right to the end. Thank goodness for great music!
